Michelle Salem For Inspiration

There’s a thrill we get from discovering anything “new” or “fresh” relating to fashion. I’m not saying the things I find are so under the radar no one knows about them yet, but if they’re new to me, I feel inspired, and the first thing I want to do is tell all of you about it!  While some of you may already know of Michelle Salem, brand manager of Opening Ceremony, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I learned of her stylish existence and immediately felt cheated that no one had told me about her before.

One very aspiring scroll through her Instagram account left us with no other choice than to do a story dedicated to her creative and commutative sense of fashion, so of course we want to share.  As you can imagine, working for a company like Opening Ceremony opens your eyes and mind to a side of the fashion industry that’s particularly unique, exposing you to the discovery and freshness feeling of some of the newest brands, trends, and more. Michelle displays her breadth of knowledge quite well via personal style and the collaborations and launches she chooses to support on her own social accounts. Following Michelle will not only be gifting yourself with cool outfit ideas, but it will also keep you in the know on some of the coolest up-and-coming designers to watch, styles to try, and of course the items you should be shopping at Opening Ceremony.

We wanted to share a recent interview in the fashion world from our friends over at WWW Fashion. Who had the pleasure of getting to ask Michelle a few questions about her career, personal style, new brands, and more. From her creative go-to outfit formula to tips on how to develop your own personal style, it’s no secret that after hearing this interview with Michelle had us over-the-moon excited, a feeling most of you will likely share.

“One of my favorite collaborations! These are from the Opening Ceremony x Vans glitter drop, and they sold out within minutes. My best friend pictured felt very lucky that day.”

We hope you enjoy Michelle’s words of wisdom as much as we did.

You’re the brand manager at Opening Ceremony. Explain your job to someone who might not know anything about fashion.

“I wear a lot of hats at Opening Ceremony (which may be why my title sounds a little broad), but for the most part, I like to think of my role as three-pronged. Firstly I manage all of our events, then I lead on press/VIP communications, and I also chime on the creative for editorial shoots and content. One of the things I appreciate about being brand manager is that my tasks vary from day to day. My job is never boring!”

What is the most challenging part of your job? The most rewarding?

“The most challenging part is not being able to do everything we’d love to do. We get approached with so many opportunities, but it’s the team’s job to filter through what’s actually possible based on our calendar. There are only 12 months in a year! The most rewarding is personally bringing a new brand or artist into our family and watching them grow. I’ve been able to watch some DJs, photographers, and brands grow from something that started with something as simple as a DM. For example in January, a cartoon artist I really liked reached out to me on Instagram; she hadn’t ever worked with a fashion brand before. This month, we launched collaborative Valentine’s Day cards and embroidery options together. I always feel like a proud mom with projects like these.”

How did you initially get your start in the industry?

“I always knew I wanted to work in fashion, but I kind of let it fall into place. I went to business school for marketing, and during that time I interned for a PR firm, worked retail, and did the door at parties. The combination of it all meant I gained real experience at a really young age; it was sometimes a pain to work through the night after a long school week, but the connections I made paid off. When I graduated, I approached our VP of marketing at the time and explained what exactly I wanted to do and what I had to offer, and he agreed to let me help him. It was a risky move, but he took me under his wing, and I grew from there.”

Are there any new brands you’re excited about this year?

“That’s so tough because there are so many, so I’m going to speak selfishly here and stick to my current wish list. I’m excited for what Daisy has in store for this year; they’re amazing people, and I love every single piece they make. I’m also loving Poms for sunglasses. I just got a pair from its new season and could not have started wearing them any faster (couldn’t even wait til the snow melted). I think they have big things coming! I’ve also had my eye on Solarium Swim and definitely plan to get a suit before it’s warmer out; the tricky part will be choosing just one.”

Has working at Opening Ceremony changed or affected your style at all? If so, how?

“For sure—being surrounded by beautiful clothes all day definitely has an effect on you! Besides being pushed to look my best every day, I’ve also really developed an appreciation for new brands. OC is all about discovery, so while I still love Dior, it’s always exciting to pick up some pieces from a fresh brand in its first or second season.”

Speaking of style, can you describe your personal style to us?

“A cross between Charlotte York and Fran Drescher in The Nanny. Fran was a little more risk-taking, and I love that. She had Dior slips, sequin maxi dresses, vinyl Courrèges two-piece sets, heart-shaped wristlets, you name it. I feel like we could’ve shared wardrobes in another life.”

What are some of your favorite Instagram accounts to follow for fashion inspiration?

“Nothing inspires me than the ’90s supermodels and the shows and editorials that featured them. That said, some of my favorite accounts to follow are @naomicampbellonline, @thatbagisfake, and @virgomood.”

What’s one piece of advice you can give to our readers on really owning and developing their personal style?

“Avoid fast fashion and challenge yourself! Try finding small brands that make pieces you love, and if that’s out of your price range, go thrifting! I grew up in Miami, and on the weekends in high school, my mom would drive me to all of my favorite thrift stores—Goodwill, Savers, I did it all. I think the hunt and challenge made me pay more attention to details like fabrics, labels, fits. Not hating on high-street brands at all, but the joy of discovering the perfect piece for yourself after hours of searching will make you realize what you really love. This will also help you not fall for trends so easily. Did you really like that piece, or did you just buy it because it was $17.99 at H&M? You’re welcome!”

Do you have a go-to outfit formula?

“On a day to day, I don’t like to spend too much time getting ready, so a two-piece set is my go-to for looking like I put thought into my outfit (when really, it took me about two minutes to decide). I also have pieces that help me feel put together no matter what. For me, it’s about a pair vintage Guess jeans that fit like a glove, the right shoe, and a great bag.”

What’s one thing you’ve bought recently that you’re still freaking out over?

“The perfect vintage Versace dress! It’s mini, tweed, and about as close as I’ll ever get to looking like Claudia Schiffer during the Gianni era.”

Which spring 2018 trends are you looking forward to wearing most?

“I think the cowboy trend is something we’re going to see a lot more of in spring 2018, and I’m all for it. I have a pair of red boots with Western harness detailing that are crying to be worn. Also, bring on the pastels. I love wearing bright happy colors to pick up my mood, especially when it’s still 20 degrees out. Of course, the monogram trend isn’t going anywhere either, and luckily I’ve been collecting monogrammed pieces for years now (my bank account is thanking me for once!).”

VICTORIAS SECRET x BALMAIN

We are still grinning huge smiles over this amazing collaboration. We could not wait to share it with you guys, can you believe it? What a dream come true. Victoria’s Secret x Balmain are here with some absolutely amazing designs.

It’s a match made in top-model heaven. Balmain and Victoria’s Secret have teamed up for a collaboration that unsurprisingly marries the glamour that both brands are known for. Designer and Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing, has created an It-girl cult around the lauded house, with fans ranging from Kendall Jenner to Joan Smalls models who, as it happens, have also become icons on the Victoria’s Secret runways over years past.

This marks the first time Victoria’s Secret has worked with another brand to create an exclusive collaboration to be sold in stores. A number of styles will also be incorporated into the VS Fashion Show in Shanghai later this month. From crystal-encrused bras to underwear with fishnet details, the collection marries Balmain’s rockstar DNA with the flash we’ve come to expect from VS’s buzzy fashion shows.

ERDEM x H&M

How’s your week going? Our is great, Friday is just around the corner and not to mention official images from the H&M and Erdem Collaboration are finally here and we had to show you guys what this collaboration is all about. This collaboration was first announced back in July 2017, London-Based designer Erdem Moralioglu brings his romantic silhouettes and beautiful prints to the fast-fashion retailer on November 2, 2017.

The collection includes both men’s, and women’s clothing as well as some amazing accessories. Erdem is officially the latest brand to team up with H&M. This London-based designer Erdem Moralıoğlu is bringing his romantic aesthetic to the fast-fashion retailer with new women’s apparel and his first-ever menswear collection. The capsule will “reinterpret the design themes from some of his most celebrated collections,” according to a press release.

“I am so happy to collaborate with H&M, and to explore my work on a whole new scale, including a menswear collection which I have never done before. It’s also such a thrill to work with Baz Luhrmann, one of the most important storytellers of our time,” the designer said in a release. Erdem is the newest addition to the slew of brands tapped by H&M, following Kenzo in 2016, Balmain in 2015, and Alexander Wang in 2014. The collaborations for this project aren’t only fashion-based. H&M also poached renowned filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby) to direct the campaign. The brand has plucked similar talent in the past last year’s ads were photographed by Jean-Paul Goude.

“For me, fashion is always about more than just clothing, it is a form of expression – a standalone art form,” Luhrmann said in a statement. Erdem x H&M will be premiere on November 2 at select H&M stores and online at hm.com.

Frankies Bikini’s Debute at Miami Swim Week

Miami Swim Week is the biggest swimwear fashion event in the world. This huge event just took place last week in Miami, with many designers waiting to show their new swimwear pieces. The event started on Thursday, July 20th and it went until Wednesday. Miami Swim Week brings together the biggest and the most popular brands as well as not so popular ones, hoping to make a huge statement. “Swim Week is the biggest platform for the swimwear industry in the U.S. It could be a chance to find the hottest new brand, or the chance to find a new distributor, a new contact, a press opportunity — it can be anything,” – says Cece Feinberg. She is the owner of the PR agency Cece Feinberg, that has been a part of the Miami Swim Week since 2004.

Over the weekend, Frankies Bikinis debuted their 2018 Resort Collection at SWIMMIAMI. In Florida, the showcase displayed various California-inspired, sultry swimwear on Saturday, July 22.

The collection, Golden State of Mind, included various colors, textures, and prints influenced from the West Coast. The color palette included hues of the ocean and sunsets with soft pinks and dark blues. The swimwear varied from one pieces and bikinis with ultra-flattering fabrics and various, edgy cuts. The show included models such as Josie Canseco, Ashley Moore, Kyra Santoro, Sofia Jamora and more to further encompass a sun-kissed, California essence. The overall collection was created by designer Francesa Aiello for an overall sporty, but feminine aesthetic.

“Like everything else in the world, I’m evolving,” said Aiello. “I’d like to think that my designs for this collection are who I am as a 22 year old woman–different, new and more mature than my last. It’s an elevated aesthetic for the Frankies Girl–effortless, edgy and universally fitting.”

Frankies Bikinis continues to show at Miami Swim Week with new designs, inspiration, and creative style.The stage was set-up with an ethereal vibe, including a bed in order to create a “slumber party” environment. The models were also in custom silk robes backstage in order to further support this theme. With the newest collection, Frankies Bikinis shows its growth as a brand since its establishment in 2012. Created out of necessity for the “perfect bikini” by Aiello, the designer moved forward to high-profile shows including Miami Swim Week in 2014. Since then, the young designer has continued to participate in the fashion case as the youngest to have ever shown at swim week.

Now with a full e-commerce site running, the brand continues to build. After the release of the brand’s 2018 Resort collection, the premium swimwear will be through the brand’s website: frankiesbikinis.com. Prices range approximately from 75 to 225 dollars, according to the site.

Dolce Gabbana Runway Goes Rogue

The most expected/unexpected thing happened during Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer ’18 runway show this past Saturday at men’s fashion week in Milan: A millennial millennial’d and spoke his mind. Raury, Atlanta native and hippie soul singer, walked in D&G’s #millennial-themed fashion show, and then did what millennials do best and went rogue at the very end.

For the second season in a row, the Italian house brought in young social media influencers to wear their clothes down the runway. Dolce & Gabbana, who have dealt with controversy before after Dolce’s statements on gay parenthood, had taken fire recently for proudly dressing America’s first lady, Melania Trump. In reaction to the criticism, the design duo launched a tongue-in-cheek meta-campaign dubbed “Boycott Dolce & Gabbana” across the designer’s social channels. In addition to a T-shirt bearing the slogan, they produced a commercial featuring a bunch of kids joyously “protesting” Dolce & Gabbana with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. As Dolce told Vogue before the show: “It’s irony! A joke! People use heavy words very easily these days. There is too much aggression.”

That was before Raury, walking in the finale, removed his Dolce & Gabbana bomber and hoodie to show words scrawled on his chest: PROTEST and DG GIVE ME FREEDOM and I AM NOT YOUR SCAPEGOAT. He disappeared immediately after leaving the runway, not joining the rest of the models for photos. A recent article with GQ spoke with the rogue millennial Saturday night (before he left Italy early the next morning) to understand why he chose to protest the campaign from the runway, and to briefly see the world of fashion and celebrity through the eyes of a 21-year-old.

GQ asked: Let’s start at square one. What did Dolce & Gabbana do that you felt was wrong?
Raury: The “Boycott Dolce & Gabbana” T-shirt they created completely makes a mockery of what “boycotting” is. Boycotting is the people’s voice. A protest is the people’s voice. It has power. It changes things. When I came out to Milan for my first time walking on a fashion runway, ever. I was excited. I’m a stylish-ass young kid but I don’t know everything about fashion. I knew nothing about the T-shirt until I was here. I had already agreed to walk for them. [The day before the show] I googled “Dolce & Gabbana” so that I could know who was who when I finally met them. I didn’t want to be disrespectful to either one of them by calling them the wrong name. When I typed up their names the first thing I saw was a headline on Fortune.com, “Dolce & Gabbana Is Trolling Melania Trump Critics With This $245 T-shirt.” National Post, AOL, etc. And then I saw a commercial featuring the boycott T-shirt and it looked playful and light hearted—it was a joke. It was a troll. Me, as a young man from Stone Mountain, Georgia, the birth place of the Klu Klux Klan, I really felt this mockery of boycotting. Who knows if boycotts didn’t happen, if Rosa Parks and M.L.K. didn’t step up… who knows if I would even exists. Boycotting matters. Boycotting is real. Dolce’s entire campaign says it’s not real. I know that if I walk out there and support or endorse anything that sits next to Trump—or support someone who even makes dinner for Trump or whatever—then that means that I support Trump also. I don’t support Trump. So I’m trapped and I have to let people know that I don’t support Trump and I don’t support those who are trying to undermine the voice of the people.

Raury went on to talk about other issues that he believes our society is facing today, and how the fashion industry is influenced through political movements. The model does not think he will be walking with DG anymore, yet believes that he will still be booked regardless of his actions on the runway.

THE CFDA AWARDS

The CFDA Awards are arguably the biggest night in the fashion world. They rival events like the Met Gala and its counterpart across the pond, the British Awards, but tonight’s event certainly holds a special place for anyone who respects the work of so many domestic and international designers who’ve been honored over the past 30-plus years. All this is to say, naturally, the red carpet is impressive. Of course, since the event is so huge, and so stylish. We’ve narrowed down our favorite looks that lit up the Hammerstein Ballroom tonight. Trust us: These are the looks everyone will be talking about in the morning (probably until next year’s awards, too).

Receiving an honor from the Council of Fashion Designers of America is one of the highest recognition’s that someone within the fashion industry can claim. But choosing one per category for the 2017 awards had to have been a very, very difficult decision. Last month the CFDA announced its official list of nominated artists, filled with both industry vets like Marc Jacobs and newcomers but only to the United States such as Raf Simons, for his short but highly impressive work at Calvin Klein. Also among the nominations are the potential recipients of the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent that celebrates so many of the talented labels we can’t stop talking about, including Off-White, Monse, and Brock Collection.

Of course, along with the annual awards, the CFDA will also honor many of the women and men who make positive change and set the bar high for what they do. This year specially, three individuals will be recognized for their work in the Women’s March, each having used her voice and talents in a different way: Cecile Richards, Gloria Steinem, and Janelle Monáe. And in the most bittersweet moment tonight, the CFDA announced that Franca Sozzani, the late editor in chief of Vogue Italia who passed away in December, will posthumously receive the Fashion Icon Award.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has a Sweet Surprise this Summer

We are so excited that the end of the semester is coming near, and that summer is right around the corner. So since summer has been on our mind, we obviously have been thinking about what to wear to our beach day activities, and late night bbq get together’s. As we were researching some of our favorite bloggers, stylists, and designers for some summer inspiration.. we came across an unexpected candidate who typically is not on our designer radar. Not a stylist, not a blogger, but supermodel Naomi Campbell. You will not believe the summer innovation she has brought to the table this season and designer by herself. So let’s get into it, as summer begins and the weather gets warmer, you might want to break out a pair of flip-flops. The shoe style is a popular and easygoing choice, but thanks to supermodel Naomi Campbell, it’s been given a major update. Campbell designed an insane pair of hybrid thong-style sandal heels, and we’re not 100% sure we could walk in them. The black shoes have a pencil-thin high heel and daunting platforms fit for a high-heel pro. While some might be intimidated by the shoes, they were made for a philanthropic cause worth supporting. Campbell designed the shoes with Havaianas for Women for Women International, an organization that helps female survivors of war rebuild their lives. Even if you won’t wear the pair yourself, you’ve got to give Campbell props for using her supermodel status for good. While there’s no word yet on where you can buy Naomi Campbell’s take on flip-flops, we provided an image of the extravagant sandal-heel hybrid for you below, or check out the supermodels Instagram page for deets.
