The Most Diverse Runway In History

Plus-size and transgender models on the runway has so far been limited to a model or two per show. That’s not to denigrate those models and designers who promote body positivity; rather, it only confirms that, despite the progress made, there’s still room for improvement. We know improvement is on the way, however we were pleasantly surprised when we sat down for NY Fashion Week to see this improvement first hand.

At swim and activewear brand Chromat, the clothes tell a story as much as the models who wear them. We wanted you guys to take the opening look at the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018 runway on Friday night: a blue-black cropped bathing suit top replete with trendy underboob, a Lara Croft Tomb Raider-esque harness, and G-string. It would have been show-defining on its own, but designer Becca McCharen-Tran didn’t cast a straight-size cisgender (non-transsexual) woman, as is the norm in fashion, to open her show. She cast transgender model and activist Leyna Bloom.Plus-size models may be underrepresented relative to the plus-size market, but so too are trans models. Last season, trans models represented 0.17 percent of all model castings, with only 12 appearances, according to the Fashion Spot’s runway-diversity report, making transgender people the least-represented group in fashion.

For Spring 2017, transgender models constituted 0.11 percent of all runway castings in other words, 10 appearances. That’s a slight increase from the Fall 2016 season, which saw eight transgender model castings in total and double the prior season, which saw five. Eight of the 10 sightings took place in New York and four of those occurred at Chromat, where designer Becca McCharen-Tran enlisted Carmen Carrera, Leyna Bloom, Maya Monès and Aurel Haize Odogbo to showcase her architectural pieces (and, in so doing, make the case against tokenism). Ines Rau represented at Hood By Air, known ally of the transgender community. That same day, designer Rio Uribe featured Monès, Torraine Futurum and Farideh Arbanian in his club kid-geared Spring 2017 presentation. “I imagined a man borrowing his girlfriend’s lingerie or wives borrowing their husbands’ shirts and vice versa, with all of it standing for what Gypsy Sport is about: mixing genders, mixing roles, mixing identities,” Uribe told WWD.

Across the pond, Greta La Medica walked for Fausto Puglisi; she was the only transgender model hired in the city for the entire week. Ditto for Lea Tisci, who represented the transgender community in Paris at her namesake’s latest Givenchy showing.

Also making an appearance on the Chromat runway: Jordyn Woods, a Wilhelmina-signed plus-size model popping up all over New York Fashion Week, first made famous for being Kylie Jenner’s best friend (the audience burst into applause when she appeared); older models, thicker and thinner; and racially representative women with natural hair and natural bodies. Stateside, the body-positive movement is gaining unprecedented momentum. The fact that New York’s Spring 2017 runways featured the most plus-size model appearances in recent history is, in a way, a quantification of this progress. Refreshingly, plus models graced high fashion runways and names other than Ashley Graham appeared on programs. Christian Siriano cast five of the top curvy models — Marquita Pring, Alessandra Garcia Lorido, Precious Lee, Sabina Karlsson and Georgia Pratt — in his Capri-inspired presentation. Pring took a turn down Tome’s runway. Tracy Reese featured curvy model and activist Desseaux along with curvy non-models, like Kristi Henderson. Karlsson, Denise Bidot, Diana Veras, Iskra Lawrence and Victoria Gomez strolled Chromat’s ever-diverse catwalk.

That said, body diversity continues to lag far behind racial diversity. Of the 2,973 model appearances in New York, plus-size models accounted for 16 spots, which translates to a lowly 0.54 percent. Widen your scope to all of Fashion Month and that number shrinks to 0.18 percent. (Nowhere in Europe did a plus-size model grace the runway.)

Season for season, it seems the only constant is that curvy models account for less than 1 percent of the runway. For Fall 2016, there were but six (albeit less concentrated) plus-size castings. The prior season (Spring 2016) saw 14 plus-size model appearances — all of which came out of Addition Elle and Chromat in New York.

As for the clothes: There were metallic and denim, structural bodices, and reworked corsets suspiciously similar to Instagram-beloved Orseund Iris corsets. Oh, and there were anti-chafe thigh bands, both on the runway and included in guests’ gift bags. And so by the show’s end, Chromat inspired cheers and applause and praise from an exuberant audience; if only it could inspire that within fashion, with a capital F.

What were your thoughts about diversity in the Spring 2017 New York Fashion Runway?

Let us here you in the comments below.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has a Sweet Surprise this Summer

We are so excited that the end of the semester is coming near, and that summer is right around the corner. So since summer has been on our mind, we obviously have been thinking about what to wear to our beach day activities, and late night bbq get together’s. As we were researching some of our favorite bloggers, stylists, and designers for some summer inspiration.. we came across an unexpected candidate who typically is not on our designer radar. Not a stylist, not a blogger, but supermodel Naomi Campbell. You will not believe the summer innovation she has brought to the table this season and designer by herself. So let’s get into it, as summer begins and the weather gets warmer, you might want to break out a pair of flip-flops. The shoe style is a popular and easygoing choice, but thanks to supermodel Naomi Campbell, it’s been given a major update. Campbell designed an insane pair of hybrid thong-style sandal heels, and we’re not 100% sure we could walk in them. The black shoes have a pencil-thin high heel and daunting platforms fit for a high-heel pro. While some might be intimidated by the shoes, they were made for a philanthropic cause worth supporting. Campbell designed the shoes with Havaianas for Women for Women International, an organization that helps female survivors of war rebuild their lives. Even if you won’t wear the pair yourself, you’ve got to give Campbell props for using her supermodel status for good. While there’s no word yet on where you can buy Naomi Campbell’s take on flip-flops, we provided an image of the extravagant sandal-heel hybrid for you below, or check out the supermodels Instagram page for deets.

So what do you guys think? We want to hear some serious feedback on these crazy shoes.

Let us hear your thoughts below.

8 Spring Style Trends You Need In Your Wardrobe

We know you find fashion lady’s love your designers, wardrobe, and trends. We’re not exactly mind readers, but thanks to the designers’ Spring ’17 runways, we can paint a pretty clear picture of the coming months in fashion. These looks set the pace for a new season, and it’s going to look a little different from the style world as you know it. Prepare for bolder prints, more frills, and some serious wardrobe disruption. While minimalism has ruled, 2017 is poised to bring some big change to our closets. We did our homework and watched our fashion weeks very carefully to come up with the perfect eight spring trends that are not just perfect for spring, but for every season. If you can rock all eight trends for spring, you are going to be set with your wardrobe for the rest of the year, and let me tell you they are absolutely worth it to take a peak at and try out.

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC // 1

Ruffles, voluminous sleeves, and nods to the Victorian era made Spring’s most covetable dresses decidedly romantic, and a touch more dramatic than your average day dresses.

(1)Erdem Spring 2017, (2)Oscar de la Renta Spring 2017, (3)Fenty x Puma by Rihanna Spring 2017, (4)Alexander McQueen Spring 2017, (5)Preen Spring 2017, (6)Rodarte Spring 2017.

VACATION PRINTS // 2

Spring’s florals are bright, splashy, and on vacation. The saturated, tropical-feeling motifs find their way onto everything, giving you those getaway vibes, even when you’re trapped at home.

(1)Peter Pilotto Spring 2017, (2)House of Holland Spring 2017, (3)Rosie Assoulin Spring 2017, (4)Tibi Spring 2017, (5)Ports 1961 Spring 2017, (6)Altuzarra Spring 2017.

TRACK HAPPY // 3

Fashion’s obsession with athleisure is a staple for Spring, delivering a riff on your favorite sweatpants and track pants. Dress them up or wear them right to the gym; either way, you’ll be right on trend.

(1)Vetements Spring 2017, (2)Fenty x Puma by Rihanna Spring 2017, (3)Markus Lupfer Spring 2017, (4)Isabel Marant Spring 2017, (5)Paul Smith Spring 2017, (6)Versace Spring 2017.

OVEREXPOSED // 4

Come Spring, overexposure will be the new norm, thanks to bra tops and bandeaus putting midriffs on full display. Opt for a little modesty with a sheer top draped over top or a jacket left wide open to show off everything.

(1)Dior Spring 2017, (2)Prada Spring 2017, (3)Bottega Veneta Spring 2017, (4)Fendi Spring 2017, (5)Gucci Spring 2017, (6)Anya Hindmarch Spring 2017.

EARN YOUR STRIPES // 5

The classic print rules for Spring, but it’s got a contemporary update in knits, sheer fabrics, and even asymmetrical cuts. And if you prefer a more traditional look, you might just want to snag new suit separates with the must-have pattern.

(1)Chanel Spring 2017, (2)Monse Spring 2017, (3)Chloé Spring 2017, (4)Erdem Spring 2017, (5)Fendi Spring 2017, (6)Lanvin Spring 2017.

WARDROBE RENEGADE // 6

Rules are meant to be broken, so why wear a button-down tucked in and buttoned up or a bra top underneath your blouse? Designers are begging you to push the envelope with clothes that are meant to be layered unexpectedly and outfits that come deconstructed.

(1)Monse Spring 2017, (2)Carven Spring 2017, (3)Céline Spring 2017, (4)Marni Spring 2017, (5)Ports 1961 Spring 2017, (6)Giambattista Valli Spring 2017.

80’S GLAM // 7

Full sleeves, high shine, and body-conscious fit signal the return of ’80s glam on the runway, ready to pump up the volume in your closet.

(1)Gucci Spring 2017, (2)Tom Ford Spring 2017, (3)Balmain Spring 2017, (4)Elie Saab Spring 2017, (5)Isabel Marant Spring 2017, (6)Preen Spring 2017.

PUNCTUATED IN PINK // 8

Pretty and soft isn’t the way you’ll think of Spring’s pink palette. The color was a designer favorite, punctuating runways with its ironic sweetness or, sometimes, bold, saturated fuchsias.

(1)Givenchy Spring 2017, (2)Bottega Veneta Spring 2017, (3)Céline Spring 2017, (4)Prabal Gurung Spring 2017, (5)Chanel Spring 2017, (6)Delpozo Spring 2017.

Hope you enjoyed our Spring savy trends!

6 Female Designers You Have To Know About

We at Find Fashion are inspired my creativity, innovation, and design. We are absolutely filled with love and inspiration when we see designers revolutionize the fashion industry. Without constant re-engineering and re thinking what is already out there; the fashion world that we see today would not exist.Think about some of the most iconic names in fashion: Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent. Each of these unprecedented brands delivers stunning pieces of couture that have redefined the fashion industry. They also share a common thread that may seem so obvious you’ve never given it a second thought: Each is named after its male founder. Although it might seem that an industry that creates products molded for women would be abundant in female leaders, the number of female heads at renowned brands has historically been lacking. However, the male-dominated fashion industry has rapidly changed in the 2000s. Thanks to the blue print layouts placed by trailblazers such as Coco Chanel, female heads are becoming more common, and with their ascendance, women are building brands of their own.

STELLA MCCARTNEY

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-10-38-22-am

Stella McCartney began her career in fashion as an intern for Christian Lacroix before rapidly landing the role of fashion director for Chloé, where she succeeded Karl Lagerfeld. In 2001, McCartney debuted her own eponymous named brand to critical acclaim. The Stella McCartney line is now admired for its colorful, lively designs that prove fashion is above all, a means to experiment and express yourself. The brand also separates itself by maintaining a cruelty-free policy that doesn’t utilize animal products in its designs.

RACHEL COMEY

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-10-42-07-am

Rachel Comey’s career in fashion began not with womenswear, but with menswear in 2001. However, Comey had built a loyal following by 2004 and soon expanded her line to include womenswear and footwear. Since then, cult favorites like the Mars Bootie and Legion jeans have come to define the brand’s chic, laid-back style that is at once practical and daring. Manufactured and helmed in New York, Comey’s brand perfectly characterizes the glamour New York fashion is known for.

MARY-KATE AND ASHLEY OLSEN

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-10-44-11-am

Twin sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen began their fashion career in 2006 with couture fashion label, The Row. After the brand’s success, the sisters established Elizabeth and James, a more moderately priced ready-to-wear line in 2007. In 2012, the sisters took home the coveted top prize at the CFDA Awards, cementing themselves as a force in fashion to be reckoned with.

MARIA GRAZIA CHIURI

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-10-46-19-am

Italian fashion designer, Maria Grazia Chiuri currently has one of the most distinguished careers in the fashion industry, with a hand in some of the most legendary names in design. Chiuri, along with designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, headed Valentino from 1999 to 2016. In the fall of 2016, Chiuri took up the mantle as Dior’s fashion director, her first time alone as head of a brand. The historical appointment made Chiuri the first woman ever appointed as director in Dior’s history. Now that is some serious girl boss material.

JENNA LYONS

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-10-49-49-am

American designer Jenna Lyons has been working for J.Crew since she was 21 as an assistant designer for its menswear division. Since then, her career at the brand has skyrocketed at a tremendous pace. She was appointed vice president of women’s design in 2003, executive creative director in 2008, and, finally, president in 2010. Lyons is an inspiration not only to female designers, but to young people in every industry who strive to turn their wildest dreams into reality.

ALESSANDRA FACCHINETTI

screen-shot-2016-12-21-at-10-51-31-am

Alessandra Facchinetti has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion. She began at Prada, working mainly with Prada’s sister line, Miu Miu. She then worked with designer Tom Ford at Gucci for four years before being appointed creative director of Valentino in 2007. In 2013, Facchinetti became creative director for Tod’s, which she was the head of until May 2016. Having forged a blazing path in the world of fashion, Facchinetti’s keen eye for pushing trends is sure to lead her to continued success.

Women are continuing to change the role’s in designer fashion and we can’t wait to see what new designers arise in 2017 to create more commotion in the industry as a whole. Our note to inspiring designers is to just keep swimming, and let your creativity soar! Do not give up on your dreams, and let these women inspire you to keep pushing through the hard work.

Tommy x Gigi

We are taking a first look at Gigi Hadid’s collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger – Tommy X Gigi, the collection that the Vogue cover star has co-created with the designer. With signature nautical nods and all-American style, the capsule collection, which features womens’ apparel, footwear and accessories in cosy knits, sleek leather and cool denim will be shown on the catwalk during New York Fashion Week. Get a preview of Hadid’s first collaboration with the label, of which she was named global brand ambassador last year, below. The collection is set to hit the public on September 9 of this year.

It was only a matter of time before Gigi Hadid tried her hand at designing, she’s already conquered the rest of the fashion world right? But what we really respect is that the supermodel is creating a line for a brand she truly loves: Tommy Hilfiger. Gigi wears pieces by the iconic American label both on the street and on the red carpet and she was the leader of the pack at the Spring 2016 show. It’s really no surprise, then, that she was also named the face of Tommy Hilfiger’s newest fragrance, The Girl, inspired by the supermodel’s free-spirited personality.

While you can browse behind-the-scenes shots of the campaign, we’re sure you’re more focused on Gigi’s clothing collection, which is shoppable on Sept. 9. We were so excited to see some of the standout pieces, like a military-style blazer and cozy cable knits, reminisce over some early sneak peek snaps, and gear up to shop everything in store and online. Affordable items include tops starting at $50 and outerwear for $295. But if you want something truly special, keep your eyes on Gigi’s $600 leather pants.

How the stylish do Flip-Flops

Traditionally, the fashion community falls flat when it comes to the thought of flip-flops. They are just too basic and outplayed to be unique in the style industry. But a certain summer shoe style popping up among fashionista’s lately may finally be changing that. Sandal brand Cornetti, worn by the likes of influencers like Rocky Barnes and Aimee Song, has a style called the “Elia” that features elements of traditional flip-flops combined with a lace-up ankle detail. The hybrid shoes are an elevated departure from your high school rubber soles, making them a no-brainer for the style crowd.

These stylish sandals are perfect for an occasion this summer, and you don’t have to compensate your sense of fashion to be able to cool down those toes. Now, Cornetti isn’t the only brand innovating the flip-flop this year… many other fashion brands are playing with the sandal style. H&M, Forever 21, and many others are also looking for to put their unique twist on the trend, so keep your eyes peeled for the perfect style for you this summer.

Miu Miu Autumn/Winter Ready-To-Wear 2016/17

As we are always looking forward in the Fashion World, We have been absolutely excited for Miu Miu’s 2016-17 Ready-to-Wear Collection for Autumn/Winter. However, we were not expecting it to be THIS GOOD! Take a look at Miu Miu’s astonishing look’s and a little commentary from Sarah Harris to really put this collection into perspective for you.

Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.56.39 AMScreen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.56.27 AMScreen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.55.31 AMScreen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.56.16 AMScreen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.56.05 AMScreen Shot 2016-03-21 at 11.55.53 AM

If there is a show that sums up the spring/summer and autumn/winter debate – specifically, what season to show when, and exactly when it should be available to buy – then Miu Miu this afternoon was it. A collision of every season jumbled into one collection, the clothes echoed the principle that it’s always summer somewhere in the world – no bad thing. The show itself began with a series of cotton poplin shirting, light and summery with straps falling off shoulders to a soundtrack of Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through the Grapevine. There were white bloomers and blue shirts, tails gathered into pillowy puffballs. Variations on the denim jacket came next, some embroidered with badges, others with white guipure lace collars partnered up with denim maxi skirts. Then came the golden fox-fur coats and a series of dark damask florals, a heavyweight fabric that seemed more akin to upholstering a sofa. It was reworked in duchess-style maxi skirts – often with hemlines hoiked up with buttoned straps, and grand coats cinched with wide velvet belts. Also on the heavier side were flocked overcoats, waxed hunting jackets and wool breeches and shooting jackets. The latter popped up at Prada’s hit show in Milan last week. There were other parallels, too, such as the selection of argyle knits which, here, were styled with crisp white handkerchiefs popping out of breast pockets. After a hiatus, Katie Grand is back on board at Miu Miu and it was evident also in the casting; from Gigi Hadid to Adriana Lima, Lara Stone, Irina Shayk, and even an appearance made by Emily Ratajkowski. All served up with sweet pearl necklaces and jewelled heels with bows. This was a show with oomph. (Sarah Harris)
